Easier performance budget tracking + new JavaScript dashboard

 Hi there,

June has been an action-packed month here at SpeedCurve HQ. We introduced support for a new metric, released a handful of awesome features, and had a blast at the O'Reilly Velocity and Fluent conferences. Keep reading for more details on all of that, but first...

Whether we're developing a feature or writing a blog post, our goal is to have everything we do help you, our users, in some way. If you have any questions, feedback, feature requests, or anything else you'd like to tell us, we're all ears. You can reply to this email or send us a note at support@speedcurve.com.

As always, thanks for reading and for being part of the SpeedCurve community.

See the true cost of JS with your JavaScript dashboard

One of the challenges of monitoring JS performance is figuring out which scripts are causing issues. To help, we're excited to introduce your new JavaScript dashboard, which lets you:

  • quickly focus on the scripts that are causing delays;
  • group JS by domain to help bubble up the most problematic consumers of CPU; and
  • use your newfound insights to create performance budgets on metrics like CPU scripting time to Page Load.

Monitor your performance budgets with your Status dashboard

Our goal: Make it easy for you to see at a glance the status of all your performance budgets so that you can quickly home in on the metrics that are hurting the most, and then drill down to diagnose the issues that are affecting performance the most.

Your new Status dashboard lets you monitor and manage all your Synthetic and LUX performance budgets – and see budget violations – in one place.

The Status dashboard is part of your Favorites ecosystem. This ecosystem also allows you to:

New metric: First Input Delay shows how quickly your site responds to user interaction

We're excited to announce the availability of the First Input Delay (FID) metric as part of LUX, our RUM product. FID, Long Tasks, and interaction metrics combine to provide insight on how JavaScript on your page hogs the CPU and affects the user experience.

FID is only available in RUM (because synthetic tests don't have users that interact). If you're not already using RUM, start a free trial of LUX to see these metrics for your website.

Meaningful UX performance metrics and how to improve them

The first question most folks ask about performance is "Which metrics should I care about?" The second question is "How do I improve them?" Lucky us, SpeedCurve founder Mark Zeman (@MarkZeman) has shared the slides from his recent O'Reilly Fluent talk, which answered both those questions.

Becoming a team lead: A survival guide

If you missed SpeedCurver Joseph Wynn's (@Joseph_Wynn) fantastic O'Reilly Fluent talk about his journey from team member to team lead, then you missed a treat. But no fear... Joseph has written an excellent follow-up post on his blog, filled with useful tips and insights.
