Lighthouse scores + the true cost of JavaScript

Aug 1, 2018

SpeedCurve

Hi there,

It's been a busy time here at SpeedCurve HQ! In just a few short months we've added:

Resting on laurels isn't our style, so we're excited to announce yet another awesome new feature...

Lighthouse scores now available in your synthetic test results

In the year since Google rolled out Lighthouse, it's safe to say that "Will you be adding Lighthouse scoring?" is one the most common questions we've fielded.

We take a rigorous approach to adding new metrics. We think the best solution is always to give you the right data, not just more data. So we're very happy to announce that after much analysis and consideration, we've added Lighthouse scores to SpeedCurve. Here's why – as well as how you can see your scores.

Ever wondered why you need both synthetic and real user monitoring?

This case study from Business Insider shows how they use their RUM and synthetic data to validate their testing.

How fast is that site, anyway?

Start Render, Speed Index, Hero Times... how do you know which metrics actually reflect how fast a page *feels* to users?

Our interactive Rendering Metrics Picker is a fun – and possibly eye-opening – way to test your own assumptions. (Check out our own evaluation of common metrics to see which ones won out.)

The cost of JavaScript

This must-read post by Google engineer Addy Osmani contains pretty much everything you need to know about the current state of JavaScript. (And we're super chuffed to see SpeedCurve charts used to help illustrate some of the many, many excellent points Addy raises.)

Our new JS dashboard lets you see the true cost of JavaScript on your pages, as well as monitor and improve its impact on users.

Becoming a team lead: A survival guide

Taking your first team lead role can be daunting. How do you set yourself up for the role? How do you steer the team direction without micromanaging? How do you look after yourself on top of handling the new responsibility?

In this video of his talk at O'Reilly Fluent in June, SpeedCurve lead developer Joseph Wynn shares advice and best practices to help you feel more comfortable once you start sitting in the proverbial big chair.

Where to find us IRL

Speaking of conferences...

Tammy Everts (@tameverts) will be at SmashingConf Freiburg on September 10-11, talking about how to find the best UX performance metrics for your site.

SpeedCurve is a proud sponsor of the inaugural performance.now() conference, happening in Amsterdam on November 8-9. Steve Souders (@Souders) and Tammy are honored to be part of the all-star speaker lineup, which includes folks like Harry Roberts, Katie Sylor-Miller, and Paul Irish.
